Business Profile
There are several large scale employers: Garland Industries, makers of commercial cooking equipment; Citterio USA, a leading manufacturer of processed meats; Ira Berger and Sons, Inc., one of the largest lumber and construction supply businesses in the northeastern United States. Balas Distributing is taking advantage of Freeland's strategic location as one of the largest dealers of aftermarket automotive products in the nation. Feussner Ford operates a thriving dealership and service complex, and both pattern-making and expert tool and die making service are available in the town. A large assortment of service businesses including groceries, apparel, wholesalers, restaurants and bars, and personal care firms supplement the industrial business of the town. In addition, large scale industrial parks in West Hazleton, Humboldt, and Mountain Top offer access to heavy manufacturing and rail facilities. Easy access to US Interstates 80 and 8 1, as well as the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeastern Extension mean that transportation is no problem for area businesses. The Pocono market to the east and access to major metropolitan markets to the north, east, and south mean that Freeland is strategically located for business large and small. Far from the "one industry" town of the early l900s Freeland business in the 1990s is moving toward increasing diversification and vitality.
